Signage
In the workplace, signs are used to warn of hazards and dangers. Hazard signs are used to warn of potentially life-threatening hazards.
Symbols and symbolic signs are regarded as a means of visual communication that is superior to words, and it breaks down language barriers.
Regulatory signs contain instructions with which failure to comply is considered to be an offence by law, or a breach of an order such as a safety procedure. These signs are further subclassed as-
- Prohibition signs indicate that an action or activity is not permitted, e.g. No Smoking
- Mandatory signs indicate that an instruction must be carried out, e.g. Hearing Protection Must Be Worn
- Limitation or restriction signs are normally numerical, e.g. Speed Limit 5 km/h
Hazard signs are of two categories –
- Danger signs warn of a particular hazard or hazardous condition that is likely to be life threatening, e.g. Danger High Voltage
- Warning signs warn of hazard or hazardous condition that is not likely to be life threatening, e.g. Slippery When Wet
